Conservation has been a personal journey for Englishman Tony Fitzjohn, who has spent the last 40 years in Africa. It began when he joined George Adamson, known worldwide as a protector of lions, at a Kenyan wildlife refuge in 1971. Fitzjohn has since revived Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania as a sanctuary for black rhinos, and is now returning to Kora National Park in Kenya, where he worked with Adamson in the early days, to try to build on that success.

Those are just some of the challenges faced by the 29 conservationists who have devoted their lives to saving the Earth’s endangered species and who have been nominated to receive the biennial Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for animal conservation. Charles Mayhew, MBE, is one of them. Mayhew, chief executive and founder of Tusk Trust in the United Kingdom, has been recognized for his efforts to protect elephants and the African ecosystem. Founded in 1990, Tusk Trust has raised $25 million for African conservation.

The start of the Safaricom Marathon was delayed by 10 minutes this year- there was an elephant on the course. As we waited for the helicopter to shoo it away, the words of the Kenyan commentator rang in my ears: "This is the only marathon in the world where lions run free on the course!"
Organised by Tusk Trust, a UK wildlife charity, the race has raised £1.8m over 12 years for its hosts, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

TITLE: Around the world in 80 raves: 'Global Party' charity event comes to London

The launch of a "global party" inspired by Phileas Fogg to raise money for charities is to be held in London this year.
More than 80 venues across the world will host a simultaenous party in September for tens of thousands of guests, aiming to raise more than £6million for charity.
Beneficiaries include the Rasia Gorbachev Foundation, Arki Busson's charity ARK (Absolute Return for Kids), ecological organisation Blue Marine Foundation and Tusk Trust.

TITLE: Technicolour rhinos spring up at museum

ART in the form of a group of 40kg rhino sculptures arrived in Oxford ahead of a year-long project aiming at promoting environmental issues in the county.
The Woa Rhino initiative will see colourful 1.6m long and 1.5m high sculptures located in different spots around Oxfordshire before they are auctioned next spring.
The auction proceeds will go to children’s charity Respite nursing for Oxfordshire’s Sick Youngsters (Rosy) and animal charity the Tusk Trust.
